Looking for adventure? Schedule a guided hike and be blown away by the vast and mysterious desert. Trails are chosen according to experience and fitness level and are generally between one to two hours.

Fire Water Lodge Hot Springs Spa offers a relaxing oasis for your well-being and comfort. We offer geothermal hot mineral water tubs in our rooms. Spa services are available with our healing arts professionals.

We are located in downtown Truth or Consequences, New Mexico in the heart of the Historic Bathhouse District. Our historic adobe motel building is a 50’s style motor court with classic charm. The guest rooms surround a charming garden sitting area with a fire pit. This is southwestern New Mexico at its finest!

Welcome! The Charles Motel & Hot Springs, open to the public daily for lodging and hot spring soaks, retains many historic characteristics that date back from the time the facility was built – the bathhouse layout is original, as is the funky vintage tile work – giving the Charles all the charm in the world.

The Charles is made up of two historical buildings. The Spa building, constructed in the late 1940s, and The Charles Apartments, built in the early ‘30s, sit side-by-side on Broadway, awaiting the arrival of guests who venture to the southwest for a relaxing getaway, or on a quest for healing, or even who “just had to stop in a town called Truth or Consequences.”

The real joy of the Charles Spa and Motel lies in the mineral-rich water that flows from the ground beneath the facility, arriving in the Charles’ baths at a piping 113.5 degrees fahrenheit. This incredible water has been used in healing for centuries.

The Charles Apartments are available for short and long-term stays, with rooms priced by the day or month. The amenities in the rooms include a sitting area, one or two beds, cable tv, and full bathrooms. Most rooms have a full kitchen; all have a refrigerator and microwave. Morning coffee and tea is available in the Lobby.

Overnight guests are allotted one mineral bath per person per day. Guests who stay for longer periods of time are encouraged to buy a bath card to keep on file for soaking as desired.

We are delighted to introduce you to our family! Ann, to the far left, is prowling San Lorenzo Canyon near Socorro. Roger is enjoying lunch at a local restaurant. Below on the left are Lisa, our younger daughter, who is a counselor to Deaf in Albuquerque; Ann & Roger; and Maia, our older daughter who lives in Veguita and is a massage therapist whose primary interest is Craniosacral therapy. Joy is our family theme! For those of you who remember Ann’s Mom, she died in June 2014 at 101.5 yrs. of age. Her advice is live to 100 but not beyond!
Roger & Ann had been regularly visiting Riverbend Hot Springs for several years and made the easy decision to move to Truth or Consequences in ’09. Roger re-modeled the front section of our house & we now welcome you to be our guests. Don’t be put off by the outside. That’s our next project, but you’ll really like your room(s) & the shower! Meanwhile, we hope YOU will join us and enjoy the hospitality, amenities, relaxation and comfort available to you at The Birch Street Retreat.
Roger is a massage therapist should you want to avail yourself of his services. You’ll read more about His Hands Healing Massage on a different page. It was Roger who built the slate, petrified wood & river rock shower you’ll see in the photographs on page 4.
Ann is an early interventionist who spent many years as a bilingual elementary teacher & then began early intervention work with the New Mexico School for the Deaf’s PIC program, which had so greatly benefitted us when Lisa was a toddler. Ann still works part time with NMSD PIC & is also Follow Up Coordinator for Newborn Hearing Screening at Albuquerque hospitals. How? By phone!
We hope you’ll come visit so we can learn about you & you can get to know us better. If you’re just coming for the lodging & soaks, that’s okay, too. We keep busy!

La Paloma Hot Springs & Spa is proud to be preserving the free flowing hot springs of Truth or Consequences in both our historic bathhouses and our outdoor pools.

La Paloma Hot Springs & Spa and La Paloma Too bathhouses are each over 90 years old and offer natural bottom pools with smooth stones covering the pores of the hot springs. Another way to experience the hot springs is by soaking your feet in the mud of the springs in our foot tubs.

Overnight lodging is available in either rustic historic cabin type Courtyard rooms or contemporary – spacious accommodations in our Paloma Suites. The Paloma suites are large graciously appointed with two bedrooms, living room, dining room and full kitchens as well as covered parking. The Courtyard rooms are each unique and vary in price beginning at $65 weekdays including 24 hour access to the hot springs. We are “pet friendly” in our Courtyard rooms.

Gardens, patios, grills, fire-pits and hammocks are available for your relaxation and we are within walking distance of restaurants, galleries, museums, visitor centers and parks. The city swimming pool is only a few blocks away and the fishing pond for children under 12 is just around the corner.

If you are looking for a quiet, serene and peaceful getaway, hermitage, retreat, respite or “staycation” with natural flowing artesian hot springs you have found them all at La Paloma Hot Springs & Spa and La Paloma Too.

Groups, retreats, clinics, workshops or family gatherings are welcome and we have a multi-purpose space called The Transformation Studio that is perfect for events available by the hour, day or weekend.

Historic tours are provided and we welcome inspection of our Courtyard rooms or Paloma Suites. Come and see why people from all over the world come to “take the waters” at La Paloma Hot Springs & Spa. Walk-in soakers are welcome. The hot springs at La Paloma offer “living” or sometimes called “structured” water and this property has a long held history of being regarded as “sacred ground”.

La Paloma Hot Springs & Spa was originally built in 1925 by Gene Anton and was called Marshall Miracle Pools. Believed to be the first car park motel in Truth or Consequences, NM (T or C) additions were made in 1940. Some of the Courtyard rooms are actually small Sears and Roebuck “cabins” that were originally constructed for workers building the dam at Elephant Butte Lake. The dam was complete circa 1920 and the cabins were moved to their present site. The property has had several owners over the years and each one made changes to suit the times and put their own “stamp” on it. The name was changed to Marshall Hot Springs many years ago and then changed to La Paloma when purchased by the current owner, Meleasa Malzahn in 2006. The Spanish called the area Ojo Caliente de Las Palomas (hot spring of the doves) so Leasa not only wanted to honor that name but liked the idea of using a dove to symbolize a peaceful atmosphere.

Our main goal is to preserve and make available the artesian hot springs located in Truth or Consequences. The La Paloma Bathhouse consists of five private free-flowing artesian pools and several foot-baths. We strive to maintain the historical ambiance while providing a clean and safe environment.

The surrounding property, previously known as Hay-Yo-Kay and now called La Paloma Too, was purchased in July, 2014 to continue our preservation efforts. This historic property has seven indoor pools, five outdoor pools, all free-flowing artesian water and five suites.

La Paloma Too has had several names such as The Yucca Bathhouse, Ye Olde Bathhouse, and Hay-Yo-Kay Bathhouse. It was also built circa 1920 and has been advertised as the oldest continuously operated bathhouse in the area. As one enters down the ramp into the “dugout” building it is like stepping back in time. We have 6 soaking pools available and a small pool in the entry that may have once been used for soap bathing or mud baths. The LongHouse is a large outdoor pool for public bathing and has long been a favorite. We have added a new floor to the LongHouse and it is available for public communal soaking or private reserved soaking. The Pagoda House is another outdoor pool.

Pools are private except the LongHouse, an outdoor pool which is communal unless reserved privately. We are family friendly and offer soaking for children 7 years and older in pools when 106 degrees or cooler. Please call in advance for lodging reservations. Soaking is on a first come, first served basis. Come for a soak or and extended stay……
